One of the most exciting developments in aesthetics, facial fat grafting, involves harvesting fat from another body area, purifying the fat cells, and carefully injecting the cells into various facial areas to smooth, plump, and rejuvenate.

How Does Facial Fat Transfer Work?

The process has several steps, the first of which is harvesting healthy fat cells from another area on your body, such as love handles, buttocks, thighs, back, or upper arms.

The fat cells are extracted with gentle liposuction to avoid damaging the cells. Once extracted, the cells are purified. They are then injected with a very fine needle into the facial areas that need plumping or restoration. While many people choose to smooth lines and wrinkles or add volume to cheeks or other facial area with synthetic dermal fillers, this process involves the use of your own natural fat cells. A percentage of the cells will become established in the new location, for a long-term smoothing effect.

Live Fat Cell Transfer for Facial Rejuvenation

The beauty of natural fat grafting is that the result is smooth and natural, as the plumping effect is created by transferring your own fat cells to your face. This procedure is also used in a Brazilian butt lift, with larger quantities of fat transferred to create a rounder, shapelier derrière.

The result of this procedure, when performed at Rashid Putman Plastic Surgery, you will be under the care of plastic surgeons who are among the finest practicing in the state. We use state-of-the-art techniques for superior results.

Facial Fat Grafting FAQ's

What is the Natural Fat Grafting Procedure Like?

The process is not extremely uncomfortable, but takes some time, as initially the fat must be harvested, washed, and purified. Once this is complete, the clean fat cells are carefully injected with a fine needle, just as with dermal fillers. The pain and discomfort are mild, with minor bruising at the liposuction access points or injection sites. The procedure requires two to three hours to complete in most cases.

How Long Will It Take To See Total Results?

You will see immediate results, but the area treated will be slightly overfilled as a percentage of the transferred cells will die off, and slowly be shed by the body over time. The final result is visible within about a year, when the transferred fat cells become fully viable with a blood supply that causes them to grow, bringing a plumper, firmer look to an aging face.

What is the Recovery Time from Natural Fat Grafting?

The recovery time varies from person to person, with swelling as the main condition to resolve. The usual period of time for this to diminish is about two weeks, after which you should feel confident enough to attend social events, although some swelling may remain. A more thorough recovery is achieved in about six weeks.

How Long Will the Results of Natural Fat Grafting Last?

The fat cells that become viable are there for the long term. They respond like your other fat cells, growing in volume as you gain weight, and shrinking if you lose weight. The advantage of fat grafting is that the result is very natural, long-lasting, soft, and smooth.
