What Can Laser Skin Resurfacing Address?
Your life experiences take a toll on your skin. As collagen production lessens with age, your skin begins to appear less firm, with wrinkles and lines appearing, along with discoloration (hyperpigmentation). Laser skin resurfacing can improve the appearance of many facial flaws, including:
- Fine lines or wrinkles around or under your eyes, forehead or mouth
- Scars from acne or chickenpox
- Aged or sun-damaged skin
- Sun spots, age spots, liver spots
- Improve your complexion if your skin appears yellow or grey
- Birthmarks such as linear epidermal nevi
- Enlarged pores or oil glands in the nose area
How Does Laser Skin Resurfacing Work?
Your surgeon uses the laser to send short, concentrated pulsating beams of light to treat surface skin flaws. This removes unwanted, damaged skin in a very precise manner, a layer at a time. Laser skin resurfacing’s targeted approach means there less risk of developing hypopigmentation, or a lightening of the skin from treatment.
The laser beam used in laser resurfacing will remove the top layer of skin, called the epidermis. It simultaneously heats the underlying skin, called the dermis. This action works to stimulate growth of new collagen fibers. As the treated area heals, the new skin is revealed -- smoother, firmer, and more evenly-toned.
What Results Can I Expect After Laser Skin Resurfacing?
You may see an immediate difference in your skin after the surface layer of dead skin cells are removed with laser skin resurfacing.
It is normal for your skin to appear reddened, as if you had a sunburn. As the redness fades you see smoother, even-toned skin revealed, looking fresh and glowing. Your skin can continue to improve for up to a year following your treatment, as your body produces more natural collagen. Results are long-lasting when you follow a custom skincare regimen, including the use of sunscreen, is followed after treatment. Laser skin resurfacing can be repeated as necessary to maintain a smooth, supple appearance that appears fresh, youthful, and natural.
